Short answer

Wegovy and Ozempic are both Novo Nordisk brands of semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist given as a weekly injection. Ozempic is approved for type 2 diabetes; Wegovy is approved for chronic weight management (and, in the US, to lower cardiovascular risk in adults with heart disease and obesity or overweight). The pens and maximum strengths differ, which is why one cannot simply stand in for the other. Peptide Confessions does not publish dosing, timing, injection or sourcing guidance.

What the trials showed

In STEP 1 (NEJM, 2021), adults without diabetes on Wegovy lost about 15% of body weight on average over 68 weeks versus about 2% on placebo. Diabetes trials of Ozempic report smaller average weight loss, partly because people with type 2 diabetes tend to lose less weight on GLP-1 drugs. SELECT (NEJM, 2023) found a 20% relative reduction in major cardiovascular events with semaglutide in people with heart disease and overweight.

What users report

In this archive most semaglutide confessions describe appetite suppression and the familiar GI side effects; some describe stopping and regaining weight. The live counts are in the semaglutide side-effects report and on the semaglutide hub. Comparing with tirzepatide? See semaglutide vs tirzepatide.

When to get help

Severe ongoing abdominal pain (possible pancreatitis or gallbladder disease), persistent vomiting with dehydration, or signs of an allergic reaction need prompt medical care. Product labels carry a warning about thyroid C-cell tumours seen in rodents.

Community Q&A

Can you switch from Ozempic to Wegovy?
Some people switch under a prescriber's supervision, often for insurance or labelling reasons. How to transition is a clinical decision.
Why is Wegovy for weight loss and Ozempic for diabetes if they're the same drug?
Each brand was tested and approved for a different purpose and comes in different pen strengths. Insurance coverage usually follows the label.
Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?
Same active ingredient, semaglutide, but different brands with different approved uses, pens and strengths. Ozempic is for type 2 diabetes; Wegovy is for chronic weight management.
Which causes more weight loss, Wegovy or Ozempic?
Wegovy's trials (STEP) were designed for weight loss and showed about 15% average loss over 68 weeks in STEP 1. Ozempic is studied for blood sugar, and its weight results are smaller on average.
Do Wegovy and Ozempic have the same side effects?
Yes, the same class of side effects: mainly nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and vomiting, with rarer risks such as gallbladder problems and pancreatitis.
Is there a generic Wegovy or Ozempic?
In Canada, yes: Health Canada authorized generic semaglutide for type 2 diabetes from April 2026 and Sevmia, a generic of Wegovy, in June 2026. Both need a prescription.
Does this page give dosing advice?
Peptide Confessions does not publish dosing, timing, injection or sourcing guidance.
