Mounjaro vs Ozempic: Different Molecules, Overlapping Uses
Mounjaro vs Ozempic: tirzepatide vs semaglutide — approved uses, trial themes, side effects and what anonymous users report. Not medical advice.

Short answer
Mounjaro and Ozempic are not the same drug. Ozempic is semaglutide (a GLP-1 receptor agonist). Mounjaro is tirzepatide (a dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist). Both are weekly injections used in type 2 diabetes care; related brands (Wegovy for semaglutide, Zepbound for tirzepatide) carry chronic weight-management labels in some countries. This page does not rank which is "better". Peptide Confessions does not publish dosing, timing, injection or sourcing guidance.

Head-to-head evidence
Last reviewed October 15, 2026.
| Trial | Who | Result |
|---|---|---|
| SURPASS-2 (NEJM 2021) | 1,879 adults with type 2 diabetes on metformin; 40 weeks; tirzepatide vs Ozempic-strength semaglutide | Tirzepatide lowered HbA1c and weight more at every dose tested (about 7.6–11.2 kg vs 5.7 kg) |
| SURMOUNT-5 (NEJM 2025) | 751 adults with obesity, no diabetes; 72 weeks; weight-management strengths | 20.2% vs 13.7% average weight loss |
Key differences
Ozempic has longer real-world history, cardiovascular outcome data in diabetes, a kidney-disease indication in the US, and authorized generics in Canada (Mounjaro vs Ozempic in Canada). Mounjaro adds GIP activity and produced more glucose and weight reduction in head-to-head trials. Both are weekly pens with similar GI side effects and class warnings; tirzepatide can reduce oral contraceptive absorption. Trial results are averages and the trials were funded by Eli Lilly, Mounjaro's maker.
What users report here
Switchers dominate: #384 says most of their 57-lb loss came after moving from semaglutide to tirzepatide; #194 forgets lunch after switching; #43 switched after hair shedding. On tirzepatide, #293 describes an HbA1c falling under 7 for the first time in years, and #105 credits it with ending years of migraines. Both drugs bring early GI complaints (#298, #276).

Community Q&A
- Can you switch from Ozempic to Mounjaro?
- Switching happens under prescriber supervision; how to transition is a clinical decision.
- Is Mounjaro stronger than Ozempic?
- In the SURPASS-2 trial, tirzepatide lowered blood sugar and weight more than semaglutide at the doses compared. "Stronger" doesn't mean right for everyone.
- Is Mounjaro the same as Ozempic?
- No. Ozempic is semaglutide (GLP-1). Mounjaro is tirzepatide (GLP-1 and GIP). Different molecules and brands.
- Which causes more weight loss, Mounjaro or Ozempic?
- In head-to-head trials tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) produced more average weight loss than semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), e.g. 20.2% vs 13.7% in SURMOUNT-5. Individual results vary; ask a clinician about goals and eligibility.
- Do they have the same side effects?
- They share a similar gastrointestinal side-effect class (nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting). Each label has its own full list and warnings.
- Is Mounjaro vs Ozempic the same as tirzepatide vs semaglutide?
- Yes for the molecules. Brand names differ by country and indication; see also Zepbound vs Wegovy for the weight-focused brands.
- Does this page give dosing advice?
- Peptide Confessions does not publish dosing, timing, injection or sourcing guidance.
