Is Ozempic a Peptide?

Yes. Ozempic is a brand of semaglutide, a synthetic GLP-1 peptide. How that differs from other peptides, and what the reports say. Not medical advice.

Is Ozempic a peptide?

Yes. Ozempic is a brand name. The drug in it is semaglutide, a synthetic peptide based on GLP-1, a hormone the gut releases. The pen is a product. The molecule is a peptide.

Wegovy is another brand of the same peptide. Rybelsus is an oral form of it. People on this site also write "sema." Those names are not different classes. Tirzepatide is a different peptide. Sermorelin and BPC-157 are peptides too, and they are not semaglutide.

Ozempic and Wegovy are approved products. The approval is the label on the product. The reports below are not the label, and they are not a reason to start or stop.

What users report about Ozempic and semaglutide

The semaglutide page is the file. Some of those confessions say Ozempic. Some say sema or Wegovy. They are personal accounts. They do not agree with each other.

Weight is the thing people write down, and the range is wide. #494 says a year and a half on Ozempic coincided with a drop from 480 lb to 180 lb. #668 says 50 lb on Ozempic, then more after switching to tirzepatide, then a regain and anxiety on retatrutide. #430 says a year and a half, a lot of weight off, and looking worse. #25 describes 52 lb. #384 says semaglutide did not stop hunger, it made eating too much feel miserable, and that most of a 57 lb loss came after switching to tirzepatide.

Stopping is its own set of reports. #57 says 14 months on, then the weight back in four. #87 stopped after 11 months and 65 lb, and says the urge to eat was back in three weeks.

Faces and guts show up by name. #259 asks about an "Ozempic zombie face." #55 says the face change is real and, in that account, showed up on retatrutide. #298 lists nausea, vomiting, constipation, and burping, and says the weight came off anyway. #603 describes vomiting that continued after stopping, and names gastroparesis. #43 describes heavy hair loss and was told it was the speed of the weight change.

One account is not a typical effect and should not be read as one. #108 says a hydrocele settled after starting Ozempic. That is what they wrote.

Is every weight-loss shot a peptide?

The shots people compare here — Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound, and the research compounds retatrutide and others — are peptide drugs or peptide candidates. The comparison worth making is which peptide, not whether Ozempic belongs to the class.

Head-to-heads already on the site: semaglutide vs tirzepatide, semaglutide vs liraglutide, and peptides for weight loss. Whether any of this is a steroid is a separate question: are peptides steroids.

Community Q&A

Is Ozempic a peptide?
Yes. Ozempic is a brand name for semaglutide. Semaglutide is a synthetic peptide based on GLP-1. The brand on the pen is a product name. The molecule is the peptide.
Is semaglutide the same thing as Ozempic?
Semaglutide is the drug. Ozempic is one brand of it. Wegovy is another brand of semaglutide. Rybelsus is an oral form. Reports on this site use all of those words for the same molecule. Tirzepatide is a different peptide.
Is Wegovy a peptide?
Wegovy is a brand of semaglutide, and semaglutide is a peptide. Same molecule as Ozempic. Different product and label.
Is Ozempic a steroid?
No. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 peptide, not an anabolic steroid and not a corticosteroid. The peptides-vs-steroids page is the longer version of that distinction.
What do people here report from Ozempic?
The semaglutide page holds the accounts. They describe weight change across a wide range (#494, #668, #430, #25), weight coming back after stopping (#57, #87), face changes (#259), and gut effects including nausea and, in one account, vomiting that continued after stopping (#298, #603). These are individual stories, not a result you should expect.
