Canada \u00b7 Ontario coverage
Is Wegovy covered by OHIP? Ontario coverage, explained.
The short answer: no. OHIP doesn't pay for take-home prescriptions at all, and Wegovy is not on the Ontario Drug Benefit formulary, the list that ODB, OHIP+ and other Ontario public programs use. Here is why, how Ozempic is different, and what to check instead.
Last reviewed October 15, 2026against Health Canada's Drug Product Database and the Ontario Drug Benefit Formulary.
OHIP vs the Ontario Drug Benefit
- OHIP covers doctor visits and hospital care. It doesn't cover drugs you fill at a pharmacy.
- The Ontario Drug Benefit covers drugs on its formulary for eligible groups: people 65 and over, OHIP+ (24 and under without a private plan), Trillium, Ontario Works, ODSP and others.
- Searching the ODB formulary for semaglutide on October 15, 2026 returned Ozempic and generic semaglutide injections (Limited Use) but no Wegovy product.

Why no province covers Wegovy
In June 2025, Canada's Drug Agencyrecommended public coverage of Wegovy only for adults with a BMI of 27 or more and established cardiovascular disease (prior heart attack, stroke or peripheral artery disease), and only with a lower price. The pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance then ended negotiations without an agreement because the manufacturer declined, as BC's December 2025 coverage decision records. Provinces generally list a drug only after those talks succeed.
Options people ask about
- Private plans: some cover Wegovy, often with prior authorization. Ask your insurer.
- Generic Wegovy: Health Canada authorized Sevmia, the first generic semaglutide for weight management, in June 2026. Coverage still depends on your plan. See generic semaglutide in Canada.
- Exceptional Access Program: Ontario reviews some non-formulary drugs case by case; we found no published Wegovy criteria.
- Unauthorized “research” semaglutide: not a legal shortcut. Health Canada's April 2026 advisory warns against it.

Frequently asked questions
- Is Wegovy covered by OHIP?
- No. OHIP covers doctor and hospital services, not take-home prescriptions. Ontario's drug coverage is the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) program, and Wegovy is not listed on the ODB formulary as of October 2026.
- Is Wegovy covered by OHIP+ for people 24 and under?
- No. OHIP+ uses the same ODB formulary, and Wegovy isn't on it. OHIP+ also only applies to people under 25 who don't have a private plan.
- Why does Ontario cover Ozempic but not Wegovy?
- Ozempic is listed as a Limited Use ODB benefit for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy is semaglutide for chronic weight management, and no public plan lists it. Canada's Drug Agency recommended coverage only for people with established cardiovascular disease and a price cut, and national price talks ended without an agreement.
- Can I get Wegovy covered another way in Ontario?
- Some employer and private plans cover Wegovy, often with prior authorization. Ontario's Exceptional Access Program reviews drugs that are not on the formulary case by case, but we found no published criteria for Wegovy. Ask your prescriber or pharmacist.
- Does this page recommend a clinic, product or dose?
- No. We don't list clinics, sellers, prices or doses, and nothing here is medical advice. Talk to a licensed Ontario prescriber or pharmacist.
