Semaglutide in Canada: Ozempic, Wegovy and the new generics

Short answer:semaglutide is a prescription drug in Canada. Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic (type 2 diabetes) and Wegovy (weight management) are authorized, and in 2026 Canada became the first G7 country to approve generic versions (Health Canada, April 2026).

Generic semaglutide approvals in Canada (2026)

Health Canada said more submissions were under review. Approval is not the same as pharmacy stock: launch timing is up to each company, and provincial drug-plan coverage is decided separately. The generics are made by chemical synthesis rather than the recombinant process used for the brand, and were reviewed as equivalent to the Canadian reference product.

How to check a product is authorized

Every authorized drug has an eight-digit DIN that you can look up in Health Canada’s Drug Product Database. Vials sold online as ‘research semaglutide’ are not authorized, and Health Canada warns they can seriously harm (advisory). See are peptides legal in Canada?

What Canadian writers tell us

Very few published confessions name a Canadian city or province, so we do not report Canada-only statistics. As of October 15, 2026, the handful that do are about retatrutide, an unapproved investigational drug, not about Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound. Three themes come up:

  • Large self-reported weight loss over several months, sometimes alongside other unapproved peptides.
  • Frustration with cost, which pushes some people toward unregulated online sellers.
  • Little understanding of what they are taking (“I don't even understand how it works”).

That last point is the risk Health Canada flags in its April 2026 advisory on peptides bought online. We don't name sellers, prices or doses. If you're in Canada and have used an authorized GLP-1, sharing your experience anonymously from the homepage helps make these pages more useful.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Wegovy pill available in Canada?
Not as of October 2026. The FDA approved oral Wegovy in the US in December 2025 and Novo Nordisk has applied in Canada, but Health Canada has not authorized it. Rybelsus is the only authorized oral semaglutide in Canada, for type 2 diabetes.
Is there a generic semaglutide in Canada?
Yes. Canada was the first G7 country to approve one: Health Canada authorized Dr. Reddy's generic Ozempic on April 28, 2026, then Apotex's Apo-Semaglutide (May 1) and Sandoz Semaglutide (September 2026) for type 2 diabetes, and Apotex's Sevmia, a generic Wegovy for weight management, on June 29, 2026. Approval and availability in pharmacies are not the same thing.
What is the difference between Ozempic and Wegovy?
Both are semaglutide from Novo Nordisk. Ozempic is authorized in Canada for type 2 diabetes; Wegovy is authorized for chronic weight management and to reduce cardiovascular risk in eligible adults. They are prescribed with different labels and pens.
Do I need a prescription for semaglutide in Canada?
Yes. Semaglutide, brand or generic, is a prescription drug in Canada. Authorized products carry a Drug Identification Number (DIN) you can check in Health Canada's Drug Product Database.
Is 'research' semaglutide sold online legal in Canada?
No. Health Canada says injectable peptides are regulated as prescription drugs and that a 'research use only' label does not make a product legal. Unauthorized products may be contaminated or mislabelled.
What side effects do semaglutide users report?
In this archive's 37 published semaglutide confessions, burping, nausea and vomiting are the most-mentioned side-effect phrases (2 each), and #43 describes heavy hair shedding. Trials list gastrointestinal effects as the most common.
