Canada \u00b7 Oral semaglutide
The Wegovy pill in Canada: not approved yet.
Short answer
As of mid-October 2026, the Wegovy weight-loss pill is not authorized in Canada. Health Canada's Drug Product Database lists Wegovy only as injectable pens. The pill was approved in the US in December 2025, and Novo Nordisk Canada said it had applied to Health Canada. There is no public decision date. We will update this page when the status changes.
What is authorized in Canada instead
- Rybelsus — oral semaglutide for type 2 diabetes, not weight management.
- Wegovy injection and its generic Sevmia — weight management.
- Zepbound (tirzepatide) and Saxenda (liraglutide).
Do not try to substitute Rybelsus for the weight-loss pill on your own; strengths and approved uses differ.

What Canadians can do while waiting
- Ask a prescriber whether injectable Wegovy or generic semaglutide (Sevmia) fits; they contain the same active ingredient.
- If you have type 2 diabetes, Rybelsus is an authorized oral semaglutide, at lower strengths and not for weight management.
- Other oral options are in development, including orforglipron, which is not yet authorized in Canada.
- Avoid “semaglutide tablets” or drops sold online: they are unauthorized, and Health Canada has warned about unauthorized GLP-1 products.
- Side effects of oral and injectable semaglutide are similar: mainly nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation. See GLP-1 side effects in Canada.

Frequently asked questions
- Will the Wegovy pill be covered in Canada once approved?
- Unknown. Public plans generally don't cover weight-management drugs; private plans decide product by product.
- Is oral semaglutide sold online legal in Canada?
- No. Only authorized products from licensed pharmacies are legal; Rybelsus is the only authorized oral semaglutide.
- How well does the Wegovy pill work?
- In the OASIS 4 trial, people lost 13.6% of body weight on average over 64 weeks, versus 2.2% on placebo.
- Is the Wegovy pill approved in Canada?
- Not as of mid-October 2026. Health Canada's Drug Product Database lists Wegovy only as injectable pens. The FDA approved the pill in the US in December 2025, and Novo Nordisk Canada has said it applied for Health Canada approval.
- Is Rybelsus the same as the Wegovy pill?
- Both are oral semaglutide, but Rybelsus is authorized in Canada for type 2 diabetes at lower strengths. It is not authorized for weight management, and the weight-loss pill is a different, higher-strength product.

- Injectable Wegovy and its generic Sevmia (semaglutide), Zepbound (tirzepatide) and Saxenda (liraglutide), all by prescription.
