Melanotan in Canada: legal status, risks and user reports.
Melanotan I and II ("tanning peptides") are searched in Canada for sunless tanning. This page is non-commercial: Health Canada's position, the risks, and what anonymous users report.
Health Canada's position
Melanotan I and II have no authorization or DIN in the Drug Product Database. Health Canada named both in its April 2026 advisory and its August 2025 seizure advisory. They are not controlled substances under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, but selling unauthorized drugs is still illegal. More: are peptides legal in Canada?
What the evidence says
Melanotan II is not approved anywhere. Melanotan I is the same molecule as afamelanotide, approved in some countries as an implant for a rare light-sensitivity disorder, not for tanning. Reported effects of tanning injections include nausea, flushing, darkening and changing moles, and, with Melanotan II, spontaneous erections; dermatologists warn that changing moles need checking. Melanotan I vs Melanotan II vs authorized products
| Product | What it is | Status in Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Melanotan II | Research peptide sold for tanning and libido | Unauthorized; Health Canada has warned against it |
| Melanotan I | Research version related to afamelanotide | Unauthorized |
| Afamelanotide (Scenesse) | Implant for a rare light-sensitivity disorder (EPP) | Not marketed for tanning; specialist use only where approved |
| Bremelanotide (Vyleesi) | Melanocortin drug for low desire | Not authorized in Canada |
Reported effects of melanotan include nausea, flushing, darkened or new moles, and unwanted erections. Changing moles make skin-cancer checks harder; see a doctor about any new or changing spot. A tan from melanotan does not replace sunscreen.
