Canada \u00b7 BC coverage

Is Ozempic covered in BC? What PharmaCare actually covers.

“Is Ozempic covered in BC?” is one of the most-searched GLP-1 questions in British Columbia. The short answer: yes for type 2 diabetes, with Special Authority; no for weight loss. Wegovy and Mounjaro are not PharmaCare benefits. Below is what BC's own documents say, with links so you can check them yourself.

The Special Authority criteria for Ozempic

PharmaCare's Special Authority request form for semaglutide (HLTH 5826, revised February 2026) gives indefinite coverage when both are true:

  • The patient has a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, and
  • Blood-sugar control was inadequate on the highest dose of metformin they could tolerate (the prescriber can explain why metformin was avoided).

The prescriber submits the form; patients can't apply themselves. PharmaCare won't cover a DPP-4 inhibitor (linagliptin or saxagliptin) at the same time: approving one ends coverage of the other. What you actually pay still depends on your PharmaCare plan and deductible.

Why Wegovy isn't covered in BC

Canada's Drug Agency recommended public coverage of Wegovy only for adults with a BMI of 27 or more and established cardiovascular disease (a prior heart attack, stroke or peripheral artery disease), and only with a price reduction. The pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance then ended negotiations without an agreement because the manufacturer declined, so BC made Wegovy a non-benefit on December 18, 2025. Private plans and other options

  • Workplace and private plans set their own rules; some cover Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro. Check your plan booklet or ask the insurer.
  • Plans often prefer a generic semaglutide once one is listed. Ask your pharmacist.
  • “Research” semaglutide sold online isn't covered by anything because it isn't an authorized drug: see Health Canada's April 2026 advisory.

What semaglutide users report

  • 37 published anonymous semaglutide confessions; 5 mention at least one side effect.
  • 12 mention Ozempic, Wegovy or Rybelsus by name.
  • Among confessions that state a weight change in pounds, the median reported is 50 lb. Self-reported, unverified.

Most-mentioned side effects (share of semaglutide confessions):

  • Burping: 5.4% (2)
  • Nausea: 5.4% (2)
  • Vomiting: 5.4% (2)
  • Anxiety or panic: 2.7% (1)
  • Constipation: 2.7% (1)

Counts are phrase mentions in anonymous accounts, not diagnoses or clinical rates. Full breakdown and methodology: semaglutide side-effects report.
