HGH in Canada: what is authorized and what is not.

Human growth hormone (HGH, somatropin) is searched in Canada for anti-ageing and bodybuilding. This page is non-commercial: what Health Canada authorizes, what it has seized, and the evidence.

Health Canada's position

Several somatropin products, such as Genotropin, Omnitrope and Norditropin, are authorized in Canada as prescription biologic drugs; you can check each DIN in the Drug Product Database. They are prescribed by specialists for conditions such as growth hormone deficiency in children and adults, Turner syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome. Health Canada listed "HGH" and "HGH Fragment" among products in its August 2025 seizure advisory; HGH sold online without a prescription is not an authorized product. What the evidence says

In adults without growth hormone deficiency, trials show HGH can increase lean mass and reduce fat but has not been shown to improve strength or exercise capacity, and it commonly causes fluid retention, joint pain and carpal tunnel symptoms, with higher blood sugar. WADA bans HGH and GH-releasing peptides in sport. Last reviewed: October 2026.

Approved uses vs common online claims

  • Authorized uses include growth hormone deficiency in children and adults, Turner syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, chronic kidney disease in children and some other growth disorders, with specialist diagnosis.
  • Anti-ageing, fat loss and muscle building in healthy adults are not authorized uses, and evidence of benefit is weak.
  • Excess GH can cause swelling, joint pain, carpal tunnel symptoms, raised blood sugar and, long term, may raise other risks.
  • Unauthorized HGH and “GH peptides” sold online are not Health Canada authorized; see sermorelin and CJC-1295.
  • GH is prohibited in sport; see peptides for bodybuilding in Canada.
